Co-Founder – Rutenberg Realty
As a co-founder of Rutenberg Realty, the fastest growing independent residential real estate firm in New York City to date, Kathy Braddock gets a chance to do something that many other top executives in her field cannot: spend plenty of one-on-one time with her brokers.Along with founding partner and fellow real estate veteran Paul Purcell, she manages the New York office of Rutenberg, an innovative four-year-old company that prides itself on “touching its brokers closely.” Ms. Braddock’s everyday responsibilities range from meeting with agents individually to review business plans to brainstorming on how to best proceed with deals.
“Our firm’s progressive approach really resonates with brokers,” Ms. Braddock explains. “In a short span of time, we have built a team of more than 400 first-rate professional agents and are now the seventh largest residential brokerage in New York City in terms of number of brokers.”
A unique compensation structure has made Rutenberg a financially-savvy alternative for brokers and consumers alike. Brokers retain virtually 100% of the commission in exchange for a $99 monthly fee and no more than a $2,000 fee per transaction, and are part of an agent-focused atmosphere, where everyone has access to the principals of the firm and their years of experience. The consumer benefits from the arrangement as well, since the broker is motivated to work their hardest to assist the client.
“We are pleased to head up a company that has even more to offer than the customary real estate experience,” adds Ms. Braddock, who boasts more than 26 years of real estate expertise. “Our success in spite of today’s problematic economic climate is proof that our model really works.”
During her venerable career in real estate, she has held impressive positions with some of New York’s most distinguished real estate firms. Formerly executive managing Director, general sales manager for Douglas Elliman (DE), which was New York City’s and tri-state New York’s largest residential real estate brokerage, she was responsible for the oversight and supervision of the entire residential brokerage division throughout New York City, as well as suburban offices in Connecticut, New Jersey and Long Island. She also oversaw the firm’s relocation and corporate services area. Prior to joining DE in 2000, Ms. Braddock was a principal at the Intrepid New Yorker, which she founded in 1982. Ms. Braddock turned Intrepid New Yorker into New York City’s premier destination services company, handling relocation and resettling-in services for individuals and for Fortune 100 and 500 corporations whose executives and employees needed to be moved to the New York tri-state area. Her extensive understanding of the greater New York region culminated in her co-authoring two books about living in New York and navigating daily life in the area.
She, along with Mr. Purcell, also founded braddock + purcell in 2002, a Manhattan-based consultancy that operates as a “personal shopper for the consumer,” guiding them through the real estate process and matching them with the right agent.
Her wealth of industry knowledge has made Ms. Braddock a sought-after source by the media. She is regularly featured in trade publications such as The Real Deal, and can often be seen as a guest commentator on NY1 News and Fox News’s Studio B Show with Shepard Smith, where she has been called upon to share her real estate market expertise.
Ms. Braddock is a New York City native, educated at Hunter and Brearley. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College and is a member of the Real Estate Board of New York.
